Catholic Health Services (CHS) is offering local residents free prostate cancer screenings throughout September, which is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

CHS recommends screenings for those who have not had a PSA test done within the past 6 months; individuals age 40 and over at high risk due to African American heredity, family history or personal history; and asymptomatic men age 50 and older.

Figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 13 out of 100 men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. African-American men are more likely to get prostate cancer and those with a family history (father, son or brother) of prostate cancer are at greater risk.

Appointments for a free screening may be scheduled by calling 1(855) CHS-4500. Information about CHS’s full array of cancer treatment services may be obtained by visiting chsli.org/oncology.
