The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program for no cost to Suffolk County residents who have pre-diabetes or are at high risk for developing type-2 diabetes. The National DPP is a research-based program focusing on healthy eating and physical activity which showed that people with prediabetes who take part in a structured lifestyle change program can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. For people over 60 years of age, the program can reduce the risk by 71 percent.

The program, led by a trained Lifestyle Coach, meets one hour per week for 16 weeks, followed by bimonthly sessions for two months and then monthly sessions for the remainder of one year. The sessions cover healthy eating, physical activity, and lifestyle changes to help participants achieve the goals that lead to the prevention or delay of a diabetes diagnosis.

The sessions will take place from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. at the Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Office of Health Education on the following dates: March 11, 18, 25; April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; May 6, 13, 20, 27, and June 3, 10, 17, and 24. Registration is required.
