Dr. Christine Moutier, Chief Medical Officer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will help us make sense of the current body of data regarding risk of suicide among our youth and young adults, the rise in the rate of teen and young adult death due to suicide, and specifically, how we can use what is known about the impact of social media in our work to identify, address and reduce risk. What are the conversations that we should be having with youth and young adults and how do we frame those conversations? In addition, Dr. Moutier will discuss cyberbullying and risk of suicide.
Dr. Moutier knows the impact of suicide firsthand. After losing colleagues to suicide, she dedicated herself to fighting this leading cause of death. Since earning her medical degree and training in psychiatry at the University of California in San Diego, Dr. Moutier has been a practicing psychiatrist, professor of psychiatry, dean in the medical school, medical director of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, and has been clinically active with diverse patient populations, such as veterans, Asian refugee populations, as well as physicians and academic leaders with mental health conditions. She has presented at the White House, testified before the U.S. Congress on suicide prevention, and has appeared as an expert in Anderson Cooper 360, the BBC, CBS This Morning, The Atlantic, The New York Times, Time, The Washington Post, The Economist, NBC Nightly News, among others.
